What is brain injury or head trauma?

A brain injury, also called head injury or traumatic brain injury, refers to an injury where there is damage to the brain because of an external blow to the head. A "brain injury" or "head injury" occurs when there is a blow to the head as in a motor vehicle accident or a fall. In this case, the brain skull hits a stationary object in the brain, which is inside the skull, and the brain turns and twists on its axis causing localized or widespread damage. Also, the brain, a soft mass surrounded by fluid that allows it to "float," may rebound against the skull resulting in further damage.

There may be a period of unconsciousness immediately following the trauma, which may last minutes, days, weeks or longer. Due to the twisting and rebounding, the traumatically brain injured patient usually receives damage or bruising to many parts of the brain. This is called diffuse damage. An "open head injury" is a visible assault to the head and may result from a gunshot wound, an accident or an object going through the skull. This type of head injury is more likely to damage a specific area of the brain.

So-called "mild brain injury" may occur with no loss of consciousness and possibly only a dazed feeling or confused state lasting a short time. Although medical care administered may be minimal, persons with brain injury without coma may experience symptoms and impairments similar to those suffered by the survivor of a coma injury. You should consult with your brain injury attorney regarding the legal implications of your injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can significantly affect many cognitive, physical and psychological skills. Physical deficit can include ambulation, balance and coordination, fine motor skills, and strength and endurance. Cognitive deficits of language and communication, information processing, memory and perceptual skills are common. Psychological status is also often altered. Adjustment to disability issues is frequently encountered with TBI.

Brain injury can occur in many ways. Traumatic brain injuries typically result from accidents in which the head strikes an object. This is the most common type of traumatic head injury; however, other brain injuries, such as those caused by insufficient oxygen, poisoning or infection can cause similar deficits. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)

One or more of the following symptoms characterizes Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI):
• A brief loss of consciousness
• Loss of memory immediately before or after the injury
• An alteration in mental state at the time of the accident
• Focal neurological deficits

In many MTBI cases, the person seems fine on the surface, yet continues to endure chronic functional problems. Some people suffer long-term effects of MTBI, know as post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Persons suffering from PCS can experience significant changes in cognitive ability and personality.
